The Triathlon of Apeldoorn takes place in and around the Boschbad. The swim is held in the open-air pool: on the quarter distance that means twenty lengths of fifty metres, making up a kilometre. Then follow 40 kilometres of cycling in four laps of ten through the forests around Apeldoorn, and finally a 10 kilometre run partly on the pool grounds and partly through the adjoining woodland. Alongside the quarter there is an eighth, a mini distance, a parent-and-child race and youth and junior starts, so the field ranges from primary-school age to experienced triathletes. That the swim happens in a pool rather than open water makes the race well suited as a first introduction to the sport.
