For one day the Stadsloop Appingedam fills the centre of this town in Groningen with runners, walkers and children. The 5-kilometre loop leaves Westersingel, runs through the Hoflanden district and comes back out there; those doing the 10 kilometres cover that loop twice. Alongside the competitive race there is a recreational run, a company run and waymarked walking routes over 5, 10 and 15 kilometres that set off in the morning. The youngest participants have a toddler run of 100 metres and kids' runs over 400 and 800 metres, and there is frame running over 800 and 5000 metres. Race numbers are collected in the Nicolaikerk. In a few years the event has grown from a thousand to more than eighteen hundred participants.
