The Uithuizermeeden Half Marathon has a format you rarely see: the race starts in the Eemshaven and finishes in Uithuizermeeden, so the journey to the start is part of the day. The organisers arrange that transport by train from Uithuizermeeden, with the ticket included in the entry package, and take your clothing from the start to the finish. There is no need to work out your own return trip or baggage. The 21.1-kilometre course is clearly marked and carries a two-and-a-half-hour time limit, which makes it a serious race rather than a casual outing. The whole thing suits the Groningen mound landscape it runs through: open, windy and without frills.
