The Oudejaarsloop Blijham is the joint end-of-year event of athletics club Aquilo from Winschoten and football club ASVB from Blijham, drawing over a thousand participants. Runners choose between 5, 10 and 14 kilometres and the half marathon; walkers can take on 10 kilometres or the half marathon. Younger participants run 500 metres for six- and seven-year-olds and 1000 metres for ages eight to thirteen, while the 5 kilometres also carries its own classification for ages twelve to sixteen. That broad set-up means the start line holds plenty of walkers and families alongside the competitive runners. The race has been going for more than forty years and has become a fixture in eastern Groningen between Christmas and New Year.
