RunForestRun Drentsche Aa is a small-scale trail race from the Gasterije village hall in Gasteren, in the middle of the Drentsche Aa national park. Three routes head out from that base into the area, following unpaved paths past its best-known spots: the open heath of the Balloërveld, the sandy, almost dune-like stretches of the Gasterse Duinen, the Strubben-Kniphorst woods and the Evertsbos. That variety of heath, sand, forest and singletrack shapes the character of the race more than any elevation does. The organisers deliberately keep the field small, which makes for a calm and personal atmosphere, and donate part of the entry fee to a nature project in the area itself.
