The Oostvaardersrun sets off at the Buitencentrum Oostvaardersplassen on the Kitsweg in Lelystad, the gateway to Nationaal Park Nieuw Land. The routes of 10 kilometres, 16 kilometres and the half marathon keep to existing paths in the Oostvaardersveld and the Hollandse Hout as far as possible: forest track, gravel, grass strips and now and then a paved connecting stretch. The day opens at half past nine with the kids runs over 1 and 2.5 kilometres, after which the long distances go at ten. The course is marked with yellow arrows and marshals stand at the awkward points; entrants take their own time. Along the way there is a chance of grazing herds and birds in open country.
