The Monnikenloop is an island race on Schiermonnikoog, with 5 kilometres, 10 kilometres and 10 English miles as its main distances. The morning starts with the kids runs: first 1 kilometre for the youngest children, split across two age groups, then 2.5 kilometres. Around midday the adults set off, the longest distance first and the 5 and 10 kilometres shortly after. The setting is the Schiermonnikoog national park, but the journey is part of the deal: participants arrange their own ferry and find bus tickets for island transport in their race pack. That makes the Monnikenloop more of a sporting weekend than a single morning's race.
