La Course aux Flambeaux is the evening race of the Athletic Club Couvinois, with start and finish on the Place Général Piron, the central square of Couvin. The race is held in early October, when darkness falls early in Wallonia, and owes its name to that. Couvin lies in the south of the province of Namur, where the Fagne gives way to the foothills of the Ardennes, and the landscape around the town is correspondingly rolling. As a club race the setup stays small and local: the start is in the middle of town and the organisation rests with the local athletics club, which is active in Couvin the rest of the year as well.
