The Eemmeerloop covers exactly fifty kilometres around the Eemmeer lake, starting and finishing in the heart of Spakenburg. That distance can be tackled three ways: solo, as a pair or as a relay. A relay team has five runners, each covering roughly ten kilometres, and must arrange its own support car to get everyone to the four changeover points in time; each runner does a single leg. Pairs split the loop into two halves of twenty-five kilometres and change over on the Stichtse bridge. Anyone preferring something shorter picks the 5 or 10 kilometres near the village. The relay is the oldest format: the event began with it, and solo and pairs came later.
