The Bergermeerrun is organised by the residents' association of the Bergermeer, and it shows in the set-up: the district sports field is turned into start, finish and meeting place for one afternoon, and the course stays within the neighbourhood. The children open at one o'clock over 500 or 1000 metres, an hour later the 5 and the 10 kilometres go off. It therefore remains a neighbourhood afternoon with a race in it rather than a race with spectators attached. Part of the proceeds goes to a charity, which changes from edition to edition. For anyone in Alkmaar looking for a short, manageable race without travelling, this is a fixed autumn date.
