The Triathlon of Wommels is organised by Stichting Zwembad De Klomp and has now run for fourteen editions. Two distances are offered: an eighth over 500 metres swimming, 20 kilometres cycling and 5 kilometres running, and a quarter over double that. Both set off shortly after one another in the early afternoon. The swim takes place in open water, with a turning point in the course; the bike then heads out over rural roads through the Frisian clay landscape, and the run finishes straight through Wommels. The finish is on the sunbathing lawn of the swimming pool, which means competitors and spectators gather afterwards on the same patch of grass. That setup gives the race a markedly village-like and personal character.
