The Cave Triathlon takes place in and around the Albert Canal at Kanne, a village in Riemst six kilometres from Maastricht. The weekend consists of two races: the short distance on Saturday, with 750 metres of swimming, 30 kilometres on the bike and 6 kilometres of running, and the 70.3 on Sunday, with 1.9 kilometres of swimming, 90 kilometres on the bike and a half marathon. What gives the triathlon its name is the run course: each lap passes some 700 metres straight through the Caves of Kanne, where the temperature sits around twelve degrees and spectators are not admitted. The bike course climbs the Slingerberg once every lap. Both distances can also be tackled as a relay.
