The Polar Bear Trail is a winter trail race in the Savelsbos, south-east of Maastricht, starting and finishing at Velorium Outdoor Sports & Bikepark. The Savelsbos is a slope forest: short but stiff climbs and narrow singletrack define the character of the routes, so you spend more attention on footing and line choice than on pace. The organisers are among the few permitted to hold events in this protected nature reserve, which gives the trail access to terrain you would not normally run in. Three distances are on the programme. Entry numbers are capped and capacity has been reached in recent years, so signing up early pays off.
