The Stakenberg Trail sets off at the Stakenberg estate hotel, three and a half kilometres outside Elspeet and in the middle of a nature reserve on the edge of the Veluwe. There are three distances of 10, 21 and 34 kilometres, with 60, 100 and 150 metres of climbing respectively — enough to notice, too little for the climbing to decide the race. What marks the routes most is the surface: forest path, heath and sand, with long stretches where you meet nobody. The event runs through Trail Events, together with Staatsbosbeheer, the Nunspeet municipality and the estate itself — the last of which also determines where you may and may not run.
