The Petzl Night Trail turns on a single loop of six kilometres across the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, which you run once, twice or three times — hence the distances of 6, 12 and 18. It sets off at Landgoed Ginkelduin, and the whole course is covered in the dark over narrow forest paths and open heath, marked with fluorescent arrows and ribbons. A headlamp is mandatory, not advised: without one you cannot see the markings. Anyone without can borrow or buy one on the spot. Because you repeat the same lap, after the first pass you know where the roots are — which counts for more on a night trail than by day.
