About the race

The Nieuwjaarsloop De Wilp opens the running year on the first Saturday of January, with the canteen of football club De Wilper Boys on the Plantsoen as its base. The afternoon starts with the youngsters: 800 metres for the youngest entrants, then 1600 and 2400 metres for the older groups, each a quarter of an hour apart. The half marathon follows, and after that the 5 and the 10 kilometres set off together; youth up to and including sixteen run the 5 kilometres alongside the adults. The routes are laid out entirely on roads through the hedgerow landscape on the Groningen-Friesland border. Entry is possible online in advance or on the day in the canteen, where race numbers are waiting. What began as the first endurance run of the year for the local footballers now draws hundreds of runners.
