The Mundo Nieuwjaarsloop in Oud-Beijerland opens the year for walkers and runners alike. The walkers set off first over 5 or 10 kilometres; the 5 kilometres running follows, and the 10 kilometres later in the morning. The 10-kilometre course is officially certified by the Dutch athletics federation and counts towards the Grote Rivieren Loop Circuit, which makes that distance attractive to competitive runners too; every distance has prizes for the fastest three in each category. A joint warm-up is laid on shortly before the start of the 5 and 10 kilometres. Athletics club Spirit organises the race and ties it to a charity, for which participants raise money.
