The Monkey Fun Run is the obstacle race of Steenwijk, where every distance is named after a monkey: the Ringstaartmaki of 4 kilometres from age six, the Brulaap of 8 kilometres from nine and the Gorilla of 12 kilometres from fourteen. There is also the Dogsurvival, a four-kilometre run you complete together with your dog. Strength, speed and agility all come into play, but the organisers put fun first and participants set off at their own pace. Water plays a big part: the eight and twelve kilometres require a swimming certificate and the ability to swim at least two hundred metres strongly. A family ticket lets a parent and child run together.
