The Hondsrugcross is a winter classic in the Emmerdennen woods near Emmen, organised by athletics club E.A.C. de Sperwers. The course is entirely unpaved and winds through the forest, which gives the race a pronounced cross-country character: footing and gradient set the pace here, not a clean line over tarmac. The programme covers 4 and 8 kilometres for adults, plus a kids run over 1 and 2 kilometres for the youngest entrants. Every distance has prizes for the first three. The race has now been going for half a century and has become a fixed January date for cross-country runners from far around.
