The Highland Run is an obstacle race on and around the Rodeberg in the Flemish hill country, where mud, elevation and obstacles come together in wooded surroundings. Adults choose between 6 and 12 kilometres, with ten and twenty obstacles respectively; participants set off in waves so that queues at the obstacles stay manageable. The youngest Highlanders get their own course of roughly two kilometres with about five obstacles cut to their size. The event spans two days and draws some fifteen hundred entrants. At its heart is the Highland Village with a heated marquee where participants recover afterwards. The organisers warn that this is a run of extremes: the course is wet whatever the weather.
