The Heuvelrugloop is the forest race of Maarn, starting and finishing on the 5 Mei Plein in the middle of the village with routes heading into the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the Kaapse Bossen. The afternoon opens at quarter past four with the school run; at five the 5 kilometres, the 10 kilometres and the 10 English miles all set off together. That 16.1 kilometres is the longest distance and has replaced the familiar half marathon: the rules for events in the forest have been tightened, which is why all the courses have been laid out afresh. Afterwards the square stays the centre of things, with music and something to eat and drink.
