The GO Triathlon Brouwersdam is based at the sailing and surfing centre at the foot of the dam. You swim one kilometre in the Grevelingen, the largest salt-water lake in Europe; then comes the twenty-kilometre bike lap, ridden twice for the quarter and four times for the Brouwersdam90. It closes with three running laps of 3.3 kilometres with two turnarounds. Worth knowing before you enter: there is no aid anywhere on the bike course, so everything you need has to be carried — the run lap does have a station. Starts go off in waves, the long distance first. Open water, a bare dam and almost always wind make this an honest race in which pacing is everything.
