The Gelreman is a full distance triathlon in the Betuwe, set up by and for triathletes with a team of more than a hundred volunteers. The main distance counts 226 kilometres: 3.8 kilometres of swimming, 180 kilometres of cycling and a full marathon of 42.2 kilometres. Alongside it are two shorter formats, a half distance of 113 kilometres and an idiosyncratic middle variant of 158 kilometres with a longer bike leg. The swim takes place in the Rijkerswoerdse lake, the bike in forty-five kilometre loops on flat cycle paths and dikes, and the run in loops through the Park Lingezegen nature area. The setting between the rivers gives the race its character: flat, open and with ample room for an even pace.
