The Enschede Marathon is the oldest marathon in the Netherlands and a fixed spring appointment in Twente. The start and finish are on Boulevard 1945, right in the city centre. Alongside the marathon there is a half marathon, a 10 kilometres through the city, a 5 kilometres and a kids' run, plus a separate company race. The course is officially measured and fast, passing the University of Twente campus, the F35 cycle highway, the H.J. van Heek park and the old town. The field runs into the tens of thousands and the marathon draws international runners, which makes the event feel as competitive as it does urban.
