The ENCI-Bergloop is a cross-country race in Maastricht, built around the ENCI quarry and the slopes of the Sint-Pietersberg. Start and finish are at Chalet D'n Observant on the Lage Kanaaldijk, in the middle of the quarry area. The course is unpaved and undulating, with sharp little climbs, narrow trails and plenty of height difference — clearly more off-road work than an ordinary run through a city park. Runners choose between a short and a long cross; alongside them the programme has youth races and a frame run, so the field ranges from young cross-country runners to serious racers. The Dutch athletics federation recognises the ENCI-Bergloop as the oldest cross in the country, and that tradition shows in the format: plain, sporting, with the landscape in the leading role.
