The Ameland Adventure Run is the winter race on the Wadden island during advent, starting and finishing in and around Nes. Adults choose 5, 10 or 21 kilometres; children have their own run of 1 or 2 kilometres. The course lies between the Wadden Sea and the North Sea, where the winter elements form part of the challenge — wind and cold come with it. Participants get aid stations, timing, professional photography and a medal and bandana at the finish. The event is emphatically a weekend rather than just a race: there is a programme for supporters around the start, with the village's cafés and restaurants geared up for it. Places are limited, so entering early pays off.
