The Achtkastelenloop runs through the Achterhoek countryside around Vorden, past the castles and estates the race is named after. Every distance is a single lap: a one-kilometre kids run, ten kilometres, the half marathon and thirty kilometres. The course is mostly asphalt, with the odd stretch of old cobbles and paved cycle paths, and has almost no elevation change. Refreshment posts stand roughly every five kilometres with water and sports drink, and on the thirty kilometres fruit is added halfway. It is that thirty kilometres that makes the race unusual: a rare distance, run here with pacers for marathon targets from three hours up to just over four.
