The Wilhelminaberg Trappen Marathon is run on the spoil heap of the former Wilhelmina state mine in Kerkrade. One lap is a little over a kilometre and contains the stair: 248 metres long, more than five hundred steps. You choose how many laps to do — five, ten, twenty-one or forty-two — so the names of the distances refer to the lap count rather than to a measured distance in kilometres. Anyone finishing the marathon takes on more than twenty-one thousand steps and 3,150 metres of climbing, which makes this one of the hardest marathons in the Netherlands. Start and finish are on top of the hill. For children there is a lap of 238 metres. The event is organised by Stichting Foras Events.
