The Trappistenrun sets off from the Mintjens Arena on the Heidemolenbaan and runs through the green country around the Trappist abbey of Westmalle. There are three routes: 7, 14 and 21 kilometres. The start format is unusual — there is no mass gun, but three waves each with a free start window of an hour, between nine and twelve. You pick your own moment within your wave, which spreads the crowd and makes the whole thing looser than a classic road race, while your time is still recorded. All three routes carry refreshments.
