The Trail des Hautes-Fagnes sets off at the clubhouse of the football club of Xhoffraix, a village of Malmedy in the middle of the High Fens. The three distances differ sharply in difficulty: the Mini counts 14 kilometres with 400 metres of climbing, the Middle 24 with 900, and the long Trail 46 with over fourteen hundred. The course follows wooded valleys, small watercourses and open moorland, and the climbing per kilometre rises with each distance. Aid is limited and deliberately so: the Mini has one station halfway, the Middle likewise, and the long distance has more but leaves you alone for long stretches in between.
