The Stoomtramloop does not begin with running but with a train ride: participants leave station Medemblik on a historic steam tram to reach their starting point and run back from there. Those doing the 5 kilometres get off at Opperdoes; the 10 kilometres starts a station further on at Twisk and passes through Opperdoes to the finish. The gun goes shortly after the tram arrives, so the journey and the race run into one another. Both routes end at station Medemblik, with a drinks post at Opperdoes along the way. Because start and finish lie in different places there is no timing: this is emphatically a run for the experience of the railway, the landscape and the West Frisian villages.
