The Sint Nicolaasloop Zwolle falls every year on one of the last Sundays before 5 December and runs through the countryside north of the city, along the Berkum and AA-landen districts. There are four distances, and the organisers are precise about them: a kids' run of 1500 metres, a 5-plus kilometres that measures 5700 metres, an 8 kilometres of 8200 metres and the ten English miles of 16,100 metres. The frame runners set off first, then the children, and from a quarter to eleven the adult distances leave every fifteen minutes. The course uses public roads, cycle paths and footpaths and is marked with yellow arrows; a cyclist rides ahead of the fastest runners on each distance.
