The Rouwkost Run in Amersfoort falls during Baby Loss Awareness Week and is put on by Stichting Rouwkost, which supports parents after the death of a child. You can run, walk or cycle — the 5 kilometres is the shortest and most-run distance. Entrants sign up as fundraisers, with their own target and a personal page. On the grounds stand eight hundred and twenty-one empty chairs, each bearing the name of a child who is missed. That image defines the day more than the distance does: it is a commemoration you take part in by running.
