The Oriëntatieloop in Soest is about finding your own way: with a map, a compass and an SI chip past control points in the woods on the edge of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. There are five routes, graded by technical difficulty: 3, 5 and 7 kilometres for those taking it steady, and 4.5 and 8 kilometres for the experienced orienteer. Beginners first attend a compulsory starters clinic with theory and practice. Starting is not done in one field but in a two-hour window, with three participants released every minute, alternating between the even and the odd routes. Children aged three to six have a ribbon trail of their own. Compass and chip can be hired on site, so no equipment of your own is needed.
