The Molensmooiste sets off at half past nine from the Kinderdijk visitor centre, where nineteen eighteenth-century windmills stand on the UNESCO world heritage list. From there it heads into the open polders of the Alblasserwaard. The distances are set in English miles: five and ten, which is a little over eight and a little over sixteen kilometres. The course is flat and full of water, with the mills and the drainage canal as a constant backdrop; wind across the polder is the only real resistance here. The event is organised by the A.A.A. athletics club of Alblasserdam.
