The Hemelvaartsdagloop in Lekkerkerk is the annual road race of athletics club Start. The morning opens with the youth: first 1500 metres for children up to and including eleven, half an hour later 2000 metres as a competition run for entrants up to seventeen. At eleven the main distance follows over 8600 metres, counting as both a competition and a performance run, so those chasing a placing and those simply wanting to finish set off side by side. That 8.6 kilometres is not a rounded nine but the actual length of the course. The set-up stays small and uncluttered: one main distance, two youth categories and an entry fee low enough to remove any barrier.
