The Leuven Marathon starts and finishes around the Parkpoort and the Philipssite, within walking distance of the centre. There are three distances: 10 kilometres, half marathon and marathon, with the marathon and the ten kilometres setting off in the morning and the half marathon only in the early afternoon. All routes cross the old town, passing the Grote Markt, the town hall, St Peter's church, the Bondgenotenlaan and the university library. The marathon adds a green loop towards the Heverlee woods and the Brabant Forests, with fast straight stretches along the canal. The day thus alternates busy city sections with long, quiet stretches beyond the ring road.
