Les Lutins de la Saint-Patrick sets off in Deigné, a hamlet of Aywaille in the province of Liège, and runs through the Ardennes hill country around it. There are five distances: 2.8, 5, 10, 21 and 35 kilometres, the shortest two aimed mainly at young runners and families. The race falls around Saint Patrick's in the middle of March, which sets the mood and explains the name. The course stays largely on forest and field tracks; at that time of year the ground is usually wet and heavy. Because the starting village is small, everything stays close together: one square where the start, the finish and the spectators coincide.
