The In Flanders Fields Marathon runs from the Grote Markt in Diksmuide to Ieper, straight across the Westhoek. Start and finish therefore lie in different towns, and the course follows the IJzer and the Ieperlee through the polders for long stretches — over ground where the First World War front line barely moved for four years. It is the flattest marathon in Belgium and entirely on hard surface, which makes it suitable for a time, and at the same time one of the cheapest official marathons. Anyone not wanting to cover the full distance alone can enter the relay with five runners. The half marathon stands apart from all this and starts and finishes in Ieper itself.
