The Houwaartse Wijnloop runs through the vineyards of Houwaart, a village in the municipality of Tielt-Winge in the rolling Hageland. There are three distances: 4, 8 and 12 kilometres. What sets it apart is the aid station, where participants may choose between water and wine — a choice rarely offered anywhere else. Along the way the course passes the giant wine bench, from which the view stretches out across the region. The finish is on the terrace of Houwaart Leeft, where the race forms part of a wider village weekend. Because of the hilly landscape none of the three distances is flat, not even the shortest, which makes the race harder than the kilometres suggest.
