The Ekiden of Deinze is a marathon covered as a team: 42.195 kilometres in total, split across thirteen laps of just over three kilometres on the scout grounds at the Leon Declercqstraat. A team has one to five runners, so anyone wanting to do it alone may also start. Each runner completes their share in a single stint and changeovers are only allowed in the official zone by the start and finish, which means the order has to be thought through in advance. Six hours are on the clock. For the youngest there are kids' runs over 200, 400 and 800 metres. Because the lap keeps passing the start and finish, teammates and spectators stay close together.
