Challenge Almere-Amsterdam is one of the oldest long-distance triathlons in Europe and is raced entirely below sea level. The swim takes place in the Weerwater, starting next to the Kunstlinie on the Esplanade in Almere Stad; a flat bike course through the polder follows, and then a run in laps around the water, finishing on the Esplanade again. The programme reaches beyond the full distance of 3.8, 180 and 42.2 kilometres: there is a middle distance, two aqua bike variants without a run, a super sprint and a junior challenge over 400 metres, 9 and 2 kilometres. That breadth means debutants and young athletes line up on the same day as experienced long-distance triathletes.
