The 20 km of Brussels is the largest running event in Belgium, starting at the Parc du Cinquantenaire and covering twenty kilometres along the capital's broad avenues, tunnels and parks. The field runs into the tens of thousands, and the organisers handle that with a staggered start: handisport first at half past nine, then six waves of runners from ten with a quarter of an hour between them, and finally the walkers at half past eleven. You get five hours to finish, so walking is a full option rather than an exception. The number of places is capped and entry sells out, so anyone wanting in has to be early.
