The Vestingstadrun is the closing race of the Altena Road Circuit, the oldest running circuit in the Netherlands. Woudrichem provides the setting: a fortified town at the confluence of the Maas and the Waal, where the course touches the old centre before continuing on paved, quiet roads through the municipality of Altena. Because the race closes the circuit's season, it counts twice for many entrants: alongside the day's performance, a place in the overall standings is at stake. That makes for a field mixing competitive runners who still need points with recreational runners simply seeing the season out. The race also falls on a Saturday, which sets it apart from the Sunday village races in the region.
