The Summer Run is Westerlo's summer evening race, starting and finishing on the Grote Markt. The course is fast and flat and falls into roughly two halves: one through the centre of the municipality, the other through the green Nete valley. Runners choose between 5.5 and 11 kilometres, with water stations along the way. The race is part of the programme around the town fair, so the square stays busy long after the finish. A local invention is the 'Westerlo vs. The World' classification, in which the average speed of Westerlo residents is set against that of all participants from elsewhere. Changing rooms and showers are right next to the finish area.
