The Gelderse Poort Ultra is a single distance of fifty kilometres with eight hundred and fifty metres of climbing, and by Dutch standards that combination is unusual. The course uses two very different landscapes: the floodplains of the Gelderse Poort near Nijmegen, flat and open, and after that the ice-pushed ridge around the Duivelsberg and the woods near Groesbeek, where the second loop seeks out the steep climbs and the narrow paths. The hard part therefore comes late. The race is the twelfth and last of the Dutch Ultra Series, in which Trail Events holds an ultra on the final weekend of every month — anyone following the series closes the year here.
