The Dauwrennen of Den Hout starts at six in the morning on the Houtse Heuvel, on Ascension Day. That early hour is the whole idea: the Dutch tradition of walking out at dawn, only running, and comfortably done before the annual fair opens at ten. There are three distances — 7.5, 10 and 15 kilometres — all costing the same. The entry fee includes coffee and worstenbrood afterwards plus a ticket to the fair, which makes the race the opening of a village day rather than a standalone event. If you want in, be quick: the field is capped at a thousand, entry closes days beforehand and there is no signing up on the day.
