The Bokkerijdersrun is the village race of Wellen, named after the bands that roamed this region in the eighteenth century and, as the story goes, rode through the night on flying goats. The course is a traffic-free lap of 4.9 kilometres through the streets of the village; anyone running the long distance covers it twice for 9.8. The surface is ninety percent asphalt with a stretch of off-road in between, and the whole is slightly hilly — enough profile not to call it flat, too little to make it hard. Beforehand the children run their own races over 400 and 800 metres. There is refreshment and there are changing rooms.
